Improvements continue to be the focus for the Williamsport/Lycoming Regional Airport, near Montoursville. A grant of $700,000 will go toward refurbishing the 60 year old control tower. The grant money is coming to the airport, through the FAA Contract Tower Competitive Grant Program which awards grants to improve infrastructure of air traffic control towers at small-town and municipal airports.
Penn State University, along with law enforcement officials are investigating reports of at least one Penn State athlete, that was extorted last Fall into sending sexually explicit photos and videos of themselves and others. However, the university has refused to answer specific questions about how they have handled the situation. This comes more than two weeks after unsealed search warrants revealed the alleged extortion.
Williamsport Bureau of Police, along with the U.S. Marshal Service, and members of the Philadelphia Police Department, took a man wanted for homicide into custody Thursday in Lycoming County. Marcus Anthony Bell was extradited back to Philadelphia shortly after being apprehended by the authorities. The 37-year-old was wanted for a homicide that occurred in Philadelphia.
It’s First Friday today, in Williamsport, event goers can enjoy games, activities, a bounce house and more at this year’s Kids’ First Friday. Service club organization from throughout the area are sponsoring the event, that include The Kiwanis Club of Williamsport, The Newberry Lions, The Williamsport Lions Club, The Rotary Club of Williamsport and The Junior League of Williamsport. The activities put on by the service clubs will be available from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and will be located in the parking lot next to Bullfrog Brewery.
Lycoming County Commissioners had a brief exchange that had one commissioner questioning why a vote was taken for such a large amount, that did not have all three commissioners present for the vote. Chairman Scott Metzger expressed displeasure with his colleagues after they approved applying for a $1 million grant that will go toward the Old City Williamsport project in downtown. The proposed $20 million dollar project along Basin Street and between East Third Street and East Fourth Streets; is slated to have mixed uses, that will include commercial office space, a healthcare facility, a rooftop restaurant and living rooftop park; that will encompass Phase 2 of construction, near Lycoming College.
Thursday afternoons thunderstorm brought a nearly 50 mile per hour wind gust, that also contributed to numerous trees that were knocked down, causing minor damage to property. Lycoming County’s Department of Public Safety reported that about 30 emergency calls came in related to the brief storm.
Northumberland County has a Acting County Treasurer, this comes after the retirement of former Treasurer Kevin Gilroy stepped down after serving the county for twelve years. Sandra Brown has stepped in to take over the duties and plans on running for the remaining term next year. Brown has served as Deputy Treasurer for the previous five years. Meanwhile, Nathan Savidge has taken over the Chief Clerk’s position. Savidge was the former Director of Elections and was replaced by Lindsay Phillips.
A Union County man was charged for incorrectly answering questions on a firearms background check when he attempted to purchase a rifle on June 14th, at a Snyder County business. Richard Hassenplug, 44, of Mifflinburg, now faces felony charges for the transaction that occurred at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Monroe Township, Snyder County. Hassenplug was arraigned on Aug. 1 on a felony of making a false statement on transfer of firearm and misdemeanor statement under penalty. Selinsgrove District Judge John H. Reed set bail at $10,000 monetary.

The State College Spikes rolled on to a rain shortened six inning game victory over the Williamsport Crosscutters on Thursday afternoon, winning, 9 to 2. The Cutters are 7 and 4, in the second half of the season and will travel to Trenton, New Jersey for a three game weekend series there.
