FATAL CAR ACCIDENT ON ROUTE 15 FRIDAY

A woman from Hughesville was killed in a car accident on Route 15 a few miles north of Williamsport Friday night.  According to the Sun Gazette, police say 83 year old Betty Little was traveling on Route 15 south in a 2013 Chevy Equinox just before 8pm and lost control of the car around a right hand curve.  The Chevy went into the median and overturned striking a 2010 Ford Pickup truck driven in the northbound lane of Route 15 by 32 year old Joseph Friel IV of Millerton with debris from the Equinox hitting another car.  Little was transported to UPMC Williamsport where the Lycoming County Coroner said she succumbed to multiple injuries in the emergency room around 10pm.  Friel was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.  Little was not wearing her seatbelt.

WOMAN WITH MACHETE BREAKS IN, ASSAULTS VICTIM

A Williamsport woman was taken into custody after she broke into an ex boyfriend’s home and threatened a victim inside.  According to NorthcentralPA.com, police say 32 year old Dominique Shareese Jones, accompanied by a group of about 5 people, carried a machete and entered the home using an old key after being denied entry earlier in the evening of September 10th.  Jones struck the victim and threatened her before police arrived and charged her with burglary, criminal trespassing, assault, terroristic threats, and harassment.  Jones posted 25 thousand dollars bail.

SHIKELLAMY STRIKE LOOMS

The strike planned for Friday at Shikellamy school district that was pending after negotiations, is now scheduled for Tuesday. Education association representatives say talks that went on for hours were favorable Thursday. More talks were scheduled Friday and Saturday.  If a strike is to occur, Shikellamy Superintendent Jason Bendle  says it will be announced today.

DCNR ENCOURAGING TREE STAND SAFETY FOR BOW SEASON

on reminders for hunters to make sure tree stand safety is a priority.  According to Department of Natural Resource officials, tree stand falls, not firearm accidents, are the largest source of hunting-related injuries and deaths in the US, and that there are 350,000 bowhunters gearing up to hunt in the commonwealth in October.  Some reminders include checking your stand for missing parts, selecting sturdy trees, to always hunt with a partner, and carry a whistle or signaling device in case of emergency.  Hunters are also encouraged to always wear a full-body safety harness when their feet leave the ground.  Licenses are still available at huntfish.pa.gov.

COUPLE INJURED IN RUSH TOWNSHIP ACCIDENT

Two people were injured in Rush Township when there was a vehicles collision August 30th along Route 54 at Boyd Station Road. According to State Police at Stonington, the driver, 58 year old Owen Kelly of Saltsburg suffered serious injuries; and his wife, 54 year old Joy Owen,  was a passenger who was also injured. Both were transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville after the 8:45pm crash.  Seventy five year old Douglas D. Hawkins Jr of Catawissa was the other driver but was not injured.  Police did not say whether charges would be filed in the wreck.

PPL CREWS HEAD TO SOUTHERN STATES FOR HURRICANE RELIEF

Crews from Sunbury’s PPL Service center are heading to the southern states to help restore power in the wake of Hurricane Helene.  According to administrators at PPL, 60-line workers and 80 contractors from PPL are heading to Georgia to help restore power  and 50 more-line workers will go to Kentucky to assist Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company with recovery efforts.

OVERNIGHT WORK STARTS THIS WEEK ON I-80 AND I-99

Overnight work on I-80 that was scheduled to start earlier in September begins this week.  According to PennDOT, work on the High-Speed Interchange project between Interstates 80 and 99 that includes shoulder reconstruction and widening between mile markers 158 and 163 started last night on the westbound side and will continue through October weather permitting.  Work will then switch to the eastbound side of I-80.  Work will ultimately bring about new and rebuilding of existing roadways and ramps, drainage improvements, installation of Intelligent Transportation Devices, new guide rail lighting, pavement marking, stream improvements, and other miscellaneous construction.  Work is set to continue through the next six construction seasons, ending in 2030.

AVIATION CONFERENCE COMING TO WILLIAMSPORT

Pennsylvania’s 44th Annual Pennsylvania Aviation Conference is set to begin next month, hosted by the Williamsport Regional Airport.  According to the Aviation Council of Pennsylvania, the three-day conference and trade show will start October 7th  and will bring together the people and companies that utilize airport services to generate $23.6 billion of  annual economic impact in Pennsylvania.  Keynote speakers on October 8th include PennDOT Secretary Michael Carroll, Shannon Massey, Senior Vice President, Lycoming Engines, and Dr. Michael Reed, President of the Pennsylvania College of Technology.
