NEW YORK MAN ARRESTED FOR CASHING A FRAUDULENT CHECK
A man from Brooklyn, New York intercepted a check from Gregg Township Municipal Authority in Union County meant as a payment for Larson Design Group, changed lines on the check, and cashed it last summer. According to North Central PA dot com, State police at Milton say 19 year-old Jaylen C. Howard was seen on surveillance cameras cashing the check for over 13 thousand dollars that had the pay to the order line altered from the original entry. Howard was charged with felony counts of forgery, access device fraud, theft by unlawful taking, theft of mail, and other misdemeanors. He is free on 15 thousand dollars bail and has a preliminary hearing February 4th
TIOGA COUNTY MAN DIES IN BARN FIRE
A man from Tioga County was found deceased in a barn fire along Route 414 in Union Township Friday morning around 9:30am. According to state police at Montoursville 73 year-old Jay Paul Myer was found deceased inside the structure after firefighters from multiple fire companies arrived and extinguished the blaze. Troopers say Myer was entering and exiting the barn attempting to save livestock and farm machinery and was then trapped by the fast-moving fire. Myer’s death was ruled accidental from smoke inhalation and thermal trauma.
SHELTERS AND WARMING CENTERS OPEN FOR FRIGID COLD
Bitter cold temperatures expected this week are bringing about the need for warming centers and overnight shelter for residents struggling to find a warm place to sleep. In Northumberland County, Adult Community Centers will be open today through Thursday and all community members who need it are welcome to access the shelters. The locations in Mount Carmel, Sunbury, Milton the Herndon Center along Route 147, and the Coal Region center in Shamokin are open this week. A code Blue Warming Center in Williamsport at First Church Williamsport at 604 Market Street is open nights 9pm until 7:30am.
RAISE THE REGION 2025 DATES SET
Raise the Region 2025, the annual 30-hour giving campaign dedicated to supporting local nonprofits, has been announced for March 12th and 13th. According to the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania, they have once again collaborated with Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships who give stretching funds as incentives. Raise the Region helps increase the online presence of local non-profits and raises awareness for their causes. Eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving in Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Tioga, or Union counties are encouraged to participate. POLICE SEEK IDENTITY OF SUSPECT WHO USED FAKE MONEY
Two locations of a Snyder County business discovered a suspect used a thousand dollars in counterfeit money to load gift cards before he left the store January 10th. According to state police, a thirty year old man with brown skin , black curly hair and a beard, wearing a black winter jacket loaded 10 fake 100-dollar bills printed on 1-dollar bills totaling 1000 dollars on two gift cards at two Dollar General stores one on Route 104 in Perry Township, then the other along Route 35 in West Perry Township. Call state police if you have information.
WOMAN SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTING TO STEAL FROM MOTHER
A woman from Granville Summit who was arrested for attempting to withdraw $10,000 from her mother’s bank account was sentenced in Bradford County court. According to North Central PA dot com, police say 42 year old Suann Dyar was on parole for felony criminal mischief, DUI and other charges when she was caught attempting the theft and with her new sentence of one month to two years in state prison, could remain incarcerated 10 months to 10 years.
LOYALSOCK APPROVED TO UTILIZE METAL DETECTORS
At the most recent school board meeting at Loyalsock Township, in addition to approving the 2025-2026 school calendar and several financial and personnel matters, they also approved the purchase of metal detectors that are expected to be used to add a layer of safety and security in the district. According to school officials, the metal detectors will be used at select extracurricular and athletic events going forward. The first day of school at Loyalsock this summer will be August 21st and the last school day in 2026 will be June 5th.
DANVILLE MAYOR TO RETIRE IN 2025
The mayor of Danville who has served the community for over 30 years has announced her retirement. According to North Central PA dot com, Danville Mayor Bernie Swank who was first elected in 1987, will finish her final term December 31st , 2025. Notable accomplishments that Swank was a part of include helping to bring the Giant Market to the borough in 1995 and working to bring the new Danville-Riverside Bridge to the area in 2000. 85 year-old Swank, who lost her husband Red in 2022 says she will be able to spend more time with family and continue to be active as a borough resident.
